Supporting Veterans & Military Families

Texas owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who serve our country in uniform. The state is proud to have one of the largest military and veteran populations in the nation and is home to many of America’s most important military installations.

This past session, Speaker Burrows prioritized support for servicemembers and veterans through targeted investments and reforms that honor their service, ease the transition to civilian life and expand access to the care, benefits and opportunities they have earned.

Honoring Those Who Serve

The Texas House recognizes the tremendous contributions of service members, veterans and military families.

During the 89th Legislative Session, lawmakers passed measures to strengthen the support they receive and honor the sacrifices they have made.

  • Provided the state with better data to help address the veterans’ mental health crisis and save lives (HB 39)
  • Created a multi-agency task force to modernize the Texas State Guard and improve its training, equipment and readiness (HB 101)
  • Allowed college students in military programs to register early for classes that fit their training and drill schedules (HB 102)
  • Reduced licensing delays for qualified military physician and nurses transitioning from active duty to civilian practice (HB 879)
  • Made it easier for Texas veterans to access state services by creating an interagency database that connects them with available resources (SB 1814)
  • Required the Texas Veterans Commission to identify and address gaps in veterans’ services so they receive the benefits and support they have earned (HB 2193)
  • Provided a full property tax exemption for the surviving spouses of veterans who died from service-connected conditions (HB 2508)
  • Improved the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program so more eligible students can benefit from it (HB 300)
  • Allowed ROTC students and members of the Corps of Cadets at senior military colleges to pay in-state tuition at Texas public colleges and universities (HB 5646)

Secured significant funding for initiative, such as:

  • Renovating Texas Military Department Armories
  • Expanding state tuition assistance for the Texas Military Forces
  • Developing a veterans outreach database to better connect veterans with available services
  • Strengthening veterans’ mental health programs and provide additional property tax relief for disabled veterans (SB 1)

Continuing the Commitment

The Texas House is continuing its work to support veterans and military service members across the state.

Ahead of the 2027 legislative session, House committees have been directed to identify additional ways to strengthen support for veterans, including expanding access to mental health services and improving legal assistance for navigating veterans benefits.

Lawmakers are also examining ways to enhance protections for Texans and strengthen the state’s preparedness amid an increasingly uncertain geopolitical climate.

Texas will always be grateful to those who have served, and Speaker Burrows remains committed to ensuring veterans, military families and service members receive the support they deserve during and after their service.
