AUSTIN, Texas — As the 89th Legislature adjourns sine die, Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows today issued the below statement highlighting the session’s major victories for Texas families, educators, and taxpayers.
“From day one, the Texas House set bold priorities to meet the critical needs of our state— lawmakers met the moment and delivered,” said Speaker Burrows “We adjourn today having transformed public education for students, parents, and teachers through record investments and greater educational options. We reduced government overreach to empower parents and entrepreneurs with greater freedoms to raise a family or run a business, cut taxes and regulations to put more money in the pockets of taxpayers, and passed common sense laws that will protect Texas’ communities, infrastructure, and values from external threats.
“These victories didn’t happen by chance—they came about because members of the Texas House showed up ready to roll up their sleeves, focus on solutions, and deliver results. They formally engaged with over 100,000 Texans in the committee process alone, using their input to shape our work and achievements on the floor. I’m incredibly proud of what the House has accomplished and even prouder of the positive impact this session will have for generations to come.”
Key Themes & Achievements of the 89th Legislative Session:
Elevating the Teaching Profession – Passed record-breaking teacher pay raises, expanded career growth opportunities, empowered educators to maintain discipline in classrooms, and invested in methods to recruit, train, certify, and reward the next generation of teachers.
Expanding Parental Rights – Established the nation’s largest day-one education savings account program to put parents in the driver’s seat of their child’s education, provided greater parental control over their child’s learning environment, health care, and exposure to social media use or ideologically-driven content, constitutionally protected parental rights, and expanded medical freedom for Texas families.
Putting Kids First – Ensuring students graduate prepared for life with historic public education reforms, required courses in personal financial literacy and expanded Career & Technical Education programs, refocused classrooms on learning, and safeguarded students from exposure to harmful content and technologies.
Record Tax Relief – Delivered historic property tax relief totaling $51 billion, increased homestead exemptions, and raised the business personal property tax exemption threshold to $125,000.
Long-Awaited, Common Sense Public Safety Measures – Required local enforcement of federal immigration laws, strengthened bail reforms to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, established a homeland security division to combat terrorism and illegal immigration, and enhanced laws targeting and prosecuting human trafficking.
