AUSTIN, Texas — Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick today announced the House and Senate General Investigating Committees on the July 2025 Flooding Events. Created by House Resolution 177 and Senate Resolution 2 from the second called session of the 89th Legislature, these committees will meet jointly. Upon announcement, Speaker Burrows and Lieutenant Governor Patrick named committee members and issued the following statements:
“The tragedy at Camp Mystic and the flooding disasters this summer have left a devastating impact on Texas families, communities, and our entire state,” said Speaker Burrows. “As Texans work to rebuild and recover, it is the responsibility of the legislature to understand what went wrong and ensure our state is better prepared for future emergencies. While progress was made during the second special session to bolster Texans’ safety, the magnitude of this tragedy demands a comprehensive and thorough review. The House investigating committee will work alongside our Senate partners to examine the contributing factors to the devastation at Camp Mystic and identify ways to strengthen the state’s preparedness and response to flooding and other natural disasters. I want to thank Chairman Morgan Meyer and members of the House committee for their commitment to enhancing the safety of communities across the state and our Senate counterparts for their partnership in this important effort. Together, the House and Senate will work to make sure Texas emerges stronger, safer, and more resilient than ever.”
“In July, Texans were deeply saddened by the deadly flooding on the Guadalupe River, where amongst many others, 27 vibrant young girls were lost from one camp, Camp Mystic,” said Lieutenant Governor Patrick. “I was shocked to see Camp Mystic begin signing up campers for next year with so many questions unanswered about what happened that fateful morning.
“Today, I appointed the members of the Senate General Investigating Committee on the July 2025 Flooding Events to get to the bottom of exactly what occurred. This committee’s task is to examine the facts and circumstances surrounding the July flooding, including actions taken at youth summer camps. The families who lost their precious daughters deserve answers, as do all Texans, on exactly what happened on July 4th. Camp Mystic has not spoken publicly on the record as to what happened that morning. They will be invited to testify, as will others involved in this flooding event.”
